DPL Acne Treatment

Introduction

Most people in their teen years get pimples and acne vulgaris (the scientific term for the condition) is the most common skin disease in Viet Nam. Mild acne will clear with a good skin care regimen and some help from a topical product, but those with moderate and severe acne might need some additional assistance. Dermatologists increasingly are using DPL treatments for acne, with some success.

Significance for Acne skin

Acne results when the skin’s sebaceous glands produce too much oil, according to the AAD. That oil contributes to clogged pores at the skin’s surface, and also provides an ideal environment for the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) to grow unchecked. The result is pimples, whiteheads, blackheads and inflammation. DPL acne treatments target and kill P. acnes, and also may shrink the sebaceous glands, the AAD says.

DPL treatment is usually accomplished in less that 30 minutes, patients need not take time off work or interrupt their busy schedule to get their skin back to its beautiful, natural, healthy color.

What is Intense Pulsed Light (DPL)?

DPL devices use multiple wavelengths of light to treat sun-induced changes on the face, including brown pigmentation, age spots, and broken blood vessels. DPL is also used to deal with the facial changes of rosacea, including redness and broken blood vessels. DPL may be utilized for these changes on the hands, neck, and chest as well. It is safe, non-invasive and is tailored to the individual patient’s skin.

How DPL (IPL) Works

A broad spectrum of light is transmitted through a small, smooth, transparent handpiece which is gently placed over the skin. Cut-off filters in the handpiece change the wavelength range allowing it to be optimized for different applications and skin types. The light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by either the blood when treating vascular lesions or the melanin when treating pigmented lesions damaging them. The body’s natural processes then remove the injured tissue giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance.

Advantage

DPL has advantages over other laser treatments. DPL operates at a range of light wavelengths, unlike conventional lasers which use only one or two wavelengths. A variety of filters is used which enable the DPL to target different chromophores such as melanin, oxyhemoglobin, and collagen. This means we can treat a variety of conditions such as freckles, sun spots, facial veins, permanent hair reduction, brown pigment and brown spots, as well as stimulate collagen production.

Conditions that exclude you from Elos IPL treatments include pregnancy, pacemakers, active infection, a history of keloid scarring, a suspicious mole in the treatment area and Roaccutane treatment in the previous six months.  If you get cold sores, please advise us, and we will cover the treatment with a prescribed antiviral agent such as acyclovir.

Treatment area

DPL Skin Treatments using Photorejuvenation often consist of full-face treatment or treatment of isolated body areas like the hands or chest.

Process

Is DPL painful?

Treatment with DPL produces a slight tingling feeling, and on the most sensitive areas of the skin, patients may only feel a quick, light pinch. We, therefore, have our patients apply an anesthetic cream to the area at home or in the office 30-60 minutes before the procedure.

Treatments usually take approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on which area is being treated.

How many treatments will I need?
In general patients have a series of three to six treatments, approximately one month apart.

Notice

Is DPL a no-downtime procedure?

Absolutely. DPL procedures require no sedation. The average procedure takes less than 30 minutes to perform. Any redness or dark brown spots on the face can be covered with makeup immediately. Following your procedure, you can return to work or your daily schedule with no problem.

How will I look after each treatment?

Most patients experience a few days of redness and possible pinpoint bruising after the DPL procedure. Some brown spots may appear darker for a few days, then peel off.  You can apply makeup immediately after DPL treatment if necessary.

How long does the improvement in the skin last?
We like to say, you ‘turn the clock back’ with this type of procedure, but the clock keeps ticking!   Most people complete a series monthly treatments and then return for a maintenance treatment once or twice a year.
